Seva: l'arte del servizio disinteressato

Everyday, the Sun practices seva towards the Earth. In Sanskrit, seva means ‘selfless service’: the act of giving without any expectations of receiving. The purest loving kindness with no reciprocity, which then differs from an ‘altruistic action.’ Seva is all about altruistic devotion.

Ogni giorno, il Sole pratica il seva verso la Terra. In sanscrito, seva significa "servizio disinteressato": l'atto di dare senza alcuna aspettativa di ricevere. La più pura amorevole benignità senza reciprocità, che quindi differisce da una "azione altruistica". Seva è tutto sulla devozione altruistica.

How often, instead, do we call on ‘karma’? And we act kindly for receiving good karma back? This is led by a cause-effect principle…and a lot of expectations! There’s absolutely nothing bad about it. However, embracing seva would bring our actions to a whole new blissful level and would lead to the ‘art of blessed actions.’ The blessing of finding joy in just offering and discovering a reward in the act of giving to others.

Con quale frequenza, invece, facciamo appello al "karma"? E agiamo gentilmente per ricevere di nuovo buon karma? Questo è guidato da un principio di causa-effetto ... e molte aspettative! Non c'è assolutamente niente di male. Tuttavia, abbracciare il seva porterebbe le nostre azioni a un livello completamente nuovo di felicità e porterebbe alla "arte delle azioni benedette". La benedizione di trovare gioia nell'offrire e scoprire una ricompensa nell'atto di donare agli altri.

It sounds more complicated than it actually is. In reality, it’s simple.

Sembra più complicato di quanto non sia in realtà. In realtà, è semplice.

Seva is being humble. Seva is a silent smile, it is not something to show off, we don’t have to blast what we’ve done over Facebook or Instagram. We don’t have to do ‘big things’ in order to embrace it. Seva can be as little, yet meaningful, as a hug, a smile, a helping hand to a stranger. When we think about it, doesn’t this come naturally to us?

Seva è umile. Seva è un sorriso silenzioso, non è qualcosa da sfoggiare, non dobbiamo far saltare quello che abbiamo fatto su Facebook o Instagram. Non dobbiamo fare "grandi cose" per abbracciarlo. Seva può essere piccolo, ma significativo, come un abbraccio, un sorriso, una mano per uno sconosciuto. Quando ci pensiamo, questo non ci viene naturale?

The act of selfless service is intrinsic to our instinct; we just have to let it flow naturally without too much reasoning around it.

L'atto del servizio disinteressato è intrinseco al nostro istinto; dobbiamo solo lasciarlo fluire naturalmente senza ragionarci troppo attorno.

In Hindu cultures, like Bali, seva was believed to contribute to individual spiritual growth, while supporting the whole community: seva and kula (community) work hand in hand to create harmony in the society and ordinary daily life. Imagine the beauty that blossoms when everyone in a group practices love and kindness with no the expectation of receiving something in return? The act itself becomes a gift to everyone being part of it.

Nelle culture indù, come quella di Bali, si credeva che il seva contribuisse alla crescita spirituale individuale, sostenendo al contempo l'intera comunità: seva e kula (comunità) lavorano fianco a fianco per creare armonia nella società e nella vita quotidiana ordinaria. Immagina la bellezza che sboccia quando tutti in un gruppo praticano amore e gentilezza senza l'aspettativa di ricevere qualcosa in cambio? L'atto stesso diventa un dono per chiunque ne faccia parte.
